William BOYCE (1711-1779)

William Boyce est un compositeur britannique né à Londres en septembre 1711 et mort le 7 février 1779.

Choriste à douze ans, il devint apprenti organiste lorsque sa voix mua. Dans les années 1735 et 1736, Boyce fut organiste à la chapelle d'Oxford puis à Cornhill. Déjà son audition s'altérait lentement. En juin 1736 il devint compositeur à la Chapelle royale et composa de grands anthems, de la musique d'église et l'oratorio David's Lamentation over Saul and Jonathan. En 1739 il composa son Ode pour le jour de Sainte Cecile interprétée avec succès durant cinq années. En 1740 il composa un court  Opéra : Peleus and Thetis. En 1747 il publia ses sonates en trio pour deux violons et basse continue qui rencontrèrent un grand succès et furent remarquées par Haendel.

L'université de Cambridge lui conféra son doctorat de musique le 3 juillet 1749 pour son anthem O be joyful. En 1750 les théâtres de Covent Garden et de Drury Lane rivalisent en présentant un cortège funèbre pour Juliette (Roméo et Juliette). Grâce à la musique de Boyce la production de Drury Lane, dirigée par David Garrick, obtient plus de succès que celle de Covent Garden, sur une musique de Thomas Arne.

En 1757 Boyce succède à son maître, Maurice Greene, à la direction du festival des Sons of the Clergy à la cathédrale Saint-Paul et devint Master of the King's Music. Avec le King's band, il produit régulièrement une ode pour célébrer la nouvelle année et une ode pour l'anniversaire du Roi.

Les ouvertures de ces odes, mais aussi des masques et musiques de scène, ont été reprises pour ses huit symphonies à la délicate beauté (1760).

En 1758, il est l'un des trois organistes de la Chapelle royale. En 1759, Boyce écrit sa célèbre chanson Heart of Oak commémorant les victoires contre la France. En 1760 fut publié le premier volume de la Cathedral music, recueil de musique religieuse des plus célèbres compositeurs britanniques depuis les temps les plus anciens jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, projeté par Greene et que termina Boyce.

En 1768 il abandonne peu à peu ses fonctions à cause de la dégradation de son ouïe. Ses douze ouvertures sont publiées en 1770.

Curieusement, François Mitterrand prenait toujours l'ouverture pour le King's Birthday de 1775 en...ouverture à ses voeux de bonne année.

Ah bon? Je ne savais pas.

On connaît Boyce surtout pour sa musique instrumentale (symphonies, ouvertures, sonates en trio), et jusqu'à présent je n'avais rien entendu comme oeuvres vocales.

C'est chose faite avec cet oratorio (ou plutôt serenata), Solomon, qui comme son nom ne l'indique pas, n'est pas l'histoire de Salomon, mais un passage du Cantique des Cantiques, qui comme chacun sait, lui est attribué. L'oeuvre date de 1741 ou 1742.

Il est composé pour soprano, ténor (qui représentent l'épouse et l'époux - sans nom), choeur à quatre voix et orchestre, sur un livret de Moore.

L'oeuvre fait un peu penser à du Purcell plus "modernisé". Pas mal.

William Boyce (Londres, né le 11 septembre 1711 - Londres, mort le 7 février 1779) est un compositeur, organiste et éditeur anglais.

Bien qu'autrefois surtout connu pour certains de ses hymnes et son édition de Cathedral Music (1760-1773), la contribution significative qu'il a apportée à la musique instrumentale, à la chanson, à la musique chorale profane et à la musique de théâtre en Angleterre est maintenant largement reconnue.

La famille de Boyce venait du Warwickshire, où son grand-père était fermier. Son père, John, le plus jeune de cinq fils, est venu à Londres en 1691 pour être apprenti chez un menuisier. Il s'installe dans la City de Londres, en tant que menuisier et ébéniste, et épouse Elizabeth Cordwell en 1703. Ils vivaient à Maiden Lane (aujourd'hui Skinners Lane) lorsque William, le dernier de leurs quatre enfants, est né. Sa première éducation musicale fut comme choriste à la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Londres, après quoi il fut l'élève de Johann Pepusch et de Maurice Greene.

En 1734, il obtient son premier poste d'organiste à la chapelle d'Oxford et, en 1736, il devient compositeur pour la chapelle royale. En 1738, avec George Frideric Handel, Thomas Arne et Pepusch, il fonde la Society of Musicians, plus tard la Royal Society. En 1755, il était bien connu pour ses œuvres scéniques, notamment le masque de 1740 Peleus and Thetis et The Chaplet, un opéra pastoral préféré de 1749. En 1755, il fut nommé maître de la King's Musick et, trois ans plus tard, organiste de la Chapelle Royale.

Boyce a épousé Hannah Nixon le 9 juin 1759 et son fils William est né en mars 1764. Il souffrait d'une surdité en augmentation lente, ce qui semble avoir rendu difficile pour Boyce l'exercice de ses fonctions d'église dans les années 1760.

En tant que compositeur, bien que sa liste d'œuvres comprenne plus de 75 anthems et 4 autres mises en musique du Te Deum, Boyce était connu de son vivant principalement pour sa musique de scène, y compris six masques et des contributions de musique accessoire et de chansons à de nombreuses autres productions, pour ses odes (principalement composées après 1755 lorsqu'il succéda à Maurice Greene en tant que maître de la King's Musick), et une célèbre publication en 1747 de 12 sonates pour deux violons et continuo.
