William Mathias (1934-1992)

William James Mathias (né le 1er novembre 1934 à Whitland - mort le 29 juillet 1992 à Menal Bridge) était un compositeur gallois.

Mathias est né à Whitland, dans le Carmarthenshire, fils de James Hugues Mathias, professeur d'histoire (1893-1969) et Marian Evans, organiste et pianiste (1896-1980). Enfant prodige, il a commencé à jouer du piano à l'âge de trois ans et à composer à l'âge de cinq ans. À l'âge de six ans, il commence à prendre des cours de piano avec David Lloyd Phillips de Llanfyrnach, et c'est à lui que Mathias dédie sa sonate pour piano, op.23.
À l'université d'Aberystwyth, Mathias a étudié le français, l' anglais et la philosophie à partir de 1952 au University College of Wales à Aberystwyth (aujourd'hui Aberystwyth University) et a obtenu son baccalauréat ès arts. Mathias était membre des Madrigal Singers élisabéthains et écrivit pour eux «Gloria in Excelsis Deo» en 1954. Il étudia à la Royal Academy of Music sous la direction de Lennox Berkeley, où il fut élu Compagnon en 1965. En 1968, il a reçu le prix Bax Society du Harriet Cohen International Music Award. Il a été professeur de musique et chef de département à l' Université du Pays de Galles, Bangor, de 1970 à 1988.

En septembre 1959, il épouse la chanteuse Margaret Yvonne Collins avec qui il eut une fille, Rhiannon, née en 1968. Il a également travaillé comme chef d'orchestre et pianiste.

Ses compositions comprennent des œuvres à grande échelle, dont un opéra, The Servants (1980), trois symphonies et trois concertos pour piano. Une grande partie de sa musique a été écrite pour la tradition chorale anglicane, le plus célèbre l' hymne Let the people praise Thee, O God (Que le peuple te loue, ô Dieu) écrit pour le mariage royal de juillet 1981 du prince Charles et de la princesse de Galles Diana Spencer, qui eut une audience télévisée estimée à 1 milliard de personnes à l'échelle mondiale.

Mathias a écrit sa Sinfonietta - initialement appelée Dance Suite - pour l' Orchestre symphonique des écoles du Leicestershire (LSSO) à la fin de 1966, qui a reçu sa première représentation au Leicester De Montfort Hall lors du Festival des écoles de 1967. Il a également été inclus dans le programme de tournée de l'orchestre pour le Danemark et l' Allemagne plus tard dans l'année. Le LSSO a réalisé le premier enregistrement commercial de Sinfonietta pour le label Pye Golden Guinea en juillet 1967 sous la direction du compositeur.

Il fonde le North Wales International Music Festival à St Asaph en 1972 et le dirige jusqu'à sa mort à Menai Bridge, à 57 ans, en 1992.

Il est enterré à l'extérieur de la cathédrale St Asaph, à St Asaph, Denbighshire, au nord du Pays de Galles.
