David Carlson (né le 13 mars 1952) est un compositeur américain.
Carlson a étudié la théorie et la composition à la High School of Arts de Los Angeles et avec Leonard Stein à la California Institute of the Arts. De 1988 à 1992, il a été coordinateur de la série New and Unusual Music du San Francisco Symphony.
Les œuvres symphoniques de David Carlson ont été interprétées par le Philadelphia Orchestra, le National Symphony Orchestra (États-Unis), le San Francisco Symphony, le BBC Symphony, l' Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, le St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, le Tanglewood Festival, etc.
Il a composé plusieurs pièces de chambre, notamment une sonate pour violoncelle, une grande œuvre pour violoncelle et choeur masculin appelée Nocturno, deux concertos pour violoncelle, ainsi qu'une grande œuvre pour alto et piano intitulée True Divided Light, créée en 2005. Carlson est le récipiendaire d’un Academy Award en musique de l'Académie américaine des arts et des lettres, deux commandes de Meet the Composer, Chamber Music America, et plusieurs autres subventions et bourses.
Il a écrit quatre opéras, dont trois ont eu de nombreuses représentations. The Midnight Angel, sur un livret et une histoire originale de l'auteur Peter S. Beagle, a été commandé par l' Opéra Théâtre de Saint-Louis, le Glimmerglass Opera et le Sacramento Opera. En 2007, il a reçu une nouvelle production du Skylight Opera Theatre de Milwaukee. Dreamskeepers avec une histoire originale et un livret d’Aden Ross, commandé par l’Utah Opera à l’occasion du centenaire de l’Utah de 1996 et présenté au Tulsa Opera en 1998 avec une nouvelle production. Anna Karenina, en collaboration avec le célèbre librettiste et directeur britannique Colin Graham, était une commande du Florida Grand Opera à l'occasion de l'ouverture en 2007 du Ziff Opera House à Miami, avec une coproduction de l' Opéra Theatre de Saint Louis. Anna Karenina a reçu une nouvelle production en septembre 2010 de l'Opera San Jose et a été à nouveau interprétée en avril 2016 par le Moores Opera Center.à l'Université de Houston.
David Carlson a vécu et travaillé à San Francisco toute sa vie adulte et vit actuellement à Napa Valley, en Californie, avec son mari et partenaire depuis 33 ans, Claudio Laghi.
