Emil Kreuz (1867-1932)

Emil Anton Joseph Friedrich Kreuz, également connu sous le nom d' Emil Frederick Thornfield (né le 25 mai 1867 à Eberfeld - mort le 3 décembre 1932 à Londres) était un violoniste, altiste, professeur, chef d'orchestre et compositeur allemand.

Emil Kreuz est né à Elberfeld près de Wuppertal, a commencé à jouer du violon à un âge précoce et a étudié avec Georg Joseph Japha (1835–1892) à Cologne dès l'âge de dix ans. À seize ans, il obtient une bourse au Royal College of Music de Londres, où il étudie le violon avec Henry Holmes et la composition avec Charles Villiers Stanford jusqu'en 1888. Pendant deux ans, il concentre ses études sur l' alto, faisant ses débuts en tant que soliste. avec Harold en Italie d' Hector Berlioz en décembre 1888 à l'un des concerts symphoniques de Londres créés par George Henschel.

Il est devenu célèbre en Angleterre. Il fut violon soliste au Festival de Leeds en 1889, altiste du Gompertz Quartet avec les violonistes Richard Gompertz, Haydn Inwards et le violoncelliste Charles Ould de 1888 à 1903, et membre du Covent Garden Opera Orchestra de 1900 à 1903. En 1903, il devient directeur musical adjoint du Covent Garden Opera et rejoint The Hallé pour étudier la direction d'orchestre avec son chef principal Hans Richter. Il s'est ensuite tourné vers le travail lyrique, en particulier la formation des chanteurs et la direction d'orchestre.
Il meurt à Londres en 1932.

Kreuz a composé de nombreuses œuvres dont des œuvres pédagogiques pour violon et alto, un concerto pour alto op. 20, des mélodies et de la musique de chambre, notamment le Prize Quintette pour cor (ou alto) et quatuor à cordes, op. 49.
