Peter Talbot Westergaard (né le 28 mai 1931 à Champaign - mort le le 26 Juin 2019 à Princeton) était un compositeur et théoricien de la musique américain. Il était professeur émérite de musique à l' Université de Princeton.
Westergaard est né le 28 mai 1931 à Champaign, Illinois. Il a suivi des études de premier cycle à l' Université de Harvard, où il obtient son bachelor en 1953, et en 1956 a obtenu un MFA de l' Université de Princeton. Il a étudié avec Roger Sessions, Walter Piston, Darius Milhaud, Edward Cone, Milton Babbitt et Wolfgang Fortner à Fribourg im Bresgau en Allemagne.
Il a enseigné à l' Université de Columbia, Amherst College et l' Université de Princeton avant de prendre sa retraite en 2001. Il a continué à être actif en tant que compositeur, principalement de l' opéra et la musique de chambre . Il est décédé en Juin 2019. l'âge de 88 ans.
Comme ancien élève de Babbit, Westergaard se distingue par sa contribution à la théorie sérielle, ainsi que pour ses compositions, qui sont caractérisées par un plaisir de symétrie et les relations miroir, avec un souci de l'utilisation systématique et intégrée de tous les paramètres de la musique, la production de niveaux multiples, claires, belles, et des motifs sonores.
