Robert RAMSEY (1590-1644)

Robert Ramsey (né vers 1590 en Ecosse - mort le 12 février 1644 à Cambridge) est un compositeur et organiste écossais. On pense qu'il était en rapport familial avec les trompettistes de la Cour, qui portaient le même nom.

Il semble donc être issu d'une famille de musiciens de la cour du roi Jacques VI d'Écosse, qu'elle suit à Londres après qu'il soit devenu le roi Jacques Ier d'Angleterre.

Il commence probablement à composer aux alentours de 1610 et peut avoir eu des relations à la Cour car il a écrit des hommages à Henry Frederick, prince de Galles qui meurt en 1612.
Il obtient son Bachelor of Music de l'université de Cambridge en 1616. Il est organiste au Trinity College de Cambridge à partir de 1628 jusqu'en 1644 et Master of the Children au collège à partir de 1637. En 1622 il a épousé Elisabeth Rydinger (v. 1600-1667) dont il eut trois enfants.

Dans les années 1630, comme John Hilton le jeune, il compose des dialogues mythologiques et bibliques tels que Dives and Abraham, Saul and the Witch of Endor et Orpheus and Pluto. Il a écrit des œuvres vocales principalement religieuses et laïques en latin et en anglais dans un style proche de l'école italienne.
