Bohuslav Martinu est un compositeur tchèque, naturalisé américain.
Né à Policka (Bohême) le 8 décembre 1890, son père est le sonneur de cloches de la ville. Dès sa plus tendre enfance, il manifeste des dons pour la musique et apprend ensuite le violon, devenant même un prodige de cet instrument. Jeune, il entre au Conservatoire de Prague dans la classe de violon, mais finit par être renvoyé au bout de deux ans ; il s'y réinscrit dans la classe d'orgue, mais une deuxième fois il est renvoyé. Ses premières compositions, en particulier pour le piano et datant de cette période (1910-1915), reflètent déjà les ambitions du compositeur par une grande richesse d'invention.
Il poursuit donc son chemin en autodidacte ; il est engagé à l'Orchestre philharmonique tchèque (nouvellement créé en 1918) en 1920 en tant que second violon, où il rencontre le chef d'orchestre Václav Talich. Sa rencontre avec le compositeur et violoniste Josef Suk marquera à jamais sa vie. Après l'indépendance de l'État tchécoslovaque, Martinu a enfin l'occasion de partir à l'étranger : il part donc à Paris où il croise Albert Roussel et Arthur Honegger qui vont jouer un grand rôle dans son existence et sa musique. Dans les années 1920-1930, il compose énormément pour le piano et la voix (des cycles de petites pièces, très souvent empruntées au folklore tchèque). Ses premiers grand succès datent du milieu des années 1930 avec notamment les Inventions pour piano et orchestre, commande du Festival de Venise (1934), Kytice (Le bouquet de fleurs, 1938) et surtout, son premier opéra, Juliette ou la Clé des Songes (1938), créé au Théâtre National de Prague par Václav Talich.
Suite à l'occupation allemande de la Tchécoslovaquie en mars 1939, il part pour les États-Unis, où il composa la majeure partie de ses œuvres pour orchestre entre 1942 et 1944. Il suscite l'admiration de chefs comme Artur Rodzinski (à l'Orchestre Philharmonique de New York), George Szell (à l'Orchestre de Cleveland) et Serge Koussevitzky (à l'Orchestre Symphonique de Boston). Entre 1942 et 1943, on lui commande un nombre impressionnant d'œuvres (environ vingt-cinq) rencontrant toutes le succès. À la fin de la guerre, il souhaite revenir en Tchécoslovaquie, mais par deux fois, il est contraint d'y renoncer. Il revient toutefois à Prague en 1951, mais la vie a changé dans sa patrie natale : Martinu décide alors de ne plus y revenir. Il ne reviendra pas non plus aux États-Unis (seulement quelques brefs séjours en 1955-1957) et se basera en France (Nice) et en Suisse (Schönenberg). Il mourut d'un cancer le 28 août 1959 à Liestal (Suisse)
Martinu a laissé un catalogue d'œuvres des plus divers : sur environ 400 œuvres, on distingue 6 symphonies (commandées en majorité par des orchestres américains entre 1942 et 1945), plusieurs grandes fresques orchestrales (Mémorial pour Lidice, Fresques de Piero della Francesca, Paraboles...), des œuvres de musique de chambre pour ensembles divers (7 quatuors à cordes, des trios, duos et quintettes, Le Bouquet de Fleurs...), des opéras (Juliette, Mirandolina, La Passion Grecque, Ariane...), des concertos (5 pour le piano, 3 pour le violoncelle, 2 pour le violon, une rhapsodie-concerto pour alto...) et une abondante littérature pour piano (Spalicek, Marionnettes, Miniatures, Sonates...), toutes basées sur l'harmonie (des modulations fréquentes et « osées »), faisant de Martinu un compositeur très apprécié aux États-Unis et en France. Harry Halbreich a publié en 1968 le catalogue chronologique de son œuvre comportant 387 numéros. On retrouve parfois la numérotation de cet auteur en guise d'opus.
Martinu ne ressemble pas à Bartok, il est dans l'ensemble plus "classique", à mon avis il se rapprocherait davantage de Kodaly par exemple

Non, pas du tout, Saint-Saens est plutôt un post romantique. Martinu est quand même plus près de Bartok que de Saint Saëns, mais sans aller jusqu'aux dissonances de certaines oeuvres de Bartok.
Difficile à dire au juste. Ce serait plutôt comme un Bartok assez "sage" comme dans le concerto pour orchestre par exemple.
Il faut dire que Martinu est très prolifique (presque 400 opus) et que plusieurs styles cohabitent selon ses périodes, un peu comme Stravinski, mais autrement.
Je connais surtout son opéra "Juliette" (qu'on m'a fait découvrir) ainsi que quelques extraits de sa musique de chambre.
J'aime assez, un style effectivement assez proche d'un Bartok, ou une sorte de chaînon manquant entre Dvorak et Bartok peut être avec un doigt de Stravinski...

Une petite merveille : son ballet en 3 actes Spalicek, dans sa version intégrale parue chez Suprophon (d'habitude on n'interprète que la Suite). Une oeuvre féérique (contes pour enfants) remplie de thème populaires (quelquefois pour choeur). Le ballet dure 97 minutes, on ne s'ennuie pas une minute.
Il y a du bon aussi dans la musique moderne

Ah, j'aime beaucoup Martinu; un des "honnêtes hommes" du XXème siècle, sans écoles et sans dogmes.
Ses premières symphonies ont été écrites pendant la guerre, et cela s'entend (on peut discerner le thème du "'dies irae" dans le premier mouvement de la Première).
Je le vois plus proche de Honegger que de Bartok, mais bon...
Ses oeuvres chorales profanes sont splendides et pleines de fraîcheur - à découvrir chez Supraphon, par Pavel Kühn et son ensemble. (Je mettrais bien une pochette ici, mais je ne sais toujours pas le faire correctement).
Très belle musique de chambre aussi, parfois très facile d'écoute comme ses Promenades, dans lesquelles il réhabilite le clavecin, quelques temps après Manuel de Falla, mais dans un autre genre.

J'aime assez, un style effectivement assez proche d'un Bartok, ou une sorte de chaînon manquant entre Dvorak et Bartok peut être avec un doigt de Stravinski...
J'ai écouté cette semaine plusieurs symphonies de Bohuslav Martinu. C'est un cycle de 6 symphonies intéressantes composées entre 1942 et 1945 pour les 5 premières et en 1951 pour la dernière. Le piano est présent dans la plupart des symphonies.
Je trouve effectivement le style intermédiaire entre Dvorak et des compositeurs plus contemporains.. peut être Bartok, Chostakovitch ?
Ce sont des oeuvres de constructions relativement classiques en 3 ou 4 mouvements.
J'écoute en ce moment la symphonie n°4. Elle fut composée en 1945 aux Etats unis et son atmosphère ensoleillée peut être reliée a l'espoir retrouvé après le conflit. Cette symphonie me fait penser à la 8eme de Dvorak par son atmosphère ensoleillée et rayonnante en quatre mouvements équilibrés. On retrouve une atmosphère tchèque dans cette oeuvre. La musique symphonique de Martinu mérite d'étre découverte ou redécouverte et en particulier ceux qui apprécient l'oeuvre symphonique de Dvorak.

Redécouverte de ses première et seconde symphonies et je me suis laissé galvaniser par la belle dynamique de ces oeuvres que je situerais davantage vers Honegger que Bartok, même si ces deux derniers ont généralement écrit une musique qui m'est plus passionnante...question de goût, je suppose...Toutefois, il est à noter de belles couleurs orchestrales, des formes généreuses et expressives, des rythmes saisissants, si bien que je vais continuer mon périple "Martinu" avec ses quatre autres symphonies.

Je trouve que la troisième symphonie gagne en grandeur par rapport aux deux premières pourtant très attachantes. La première partie du second mouvement est excellente tout comme la dernière partie du troisième, exquise elle aussi. La Symphonie N°4 m'a moins marqué bien qu'elle ne soit jamais ennuyeuse. Le troisième mouvement est quand même assez beau alors que le quatrième ne manque pas de passion.

Il faudrait que je les réécoute, car ça fait un moment que je ne ai plus écoutées, mais par mes notes celles que j'ai préférées sont les 1, 5 et 6.
A titre de comparaison musicales, tu parles, ci dessus d'Honegger. A mon avis, en ordre d'idées, et pour rester en France, ce serait plutôt Roussel, le Roussel de ses symphonies 3 et 4.

Roussel? Je ne connais pas assez pour pouvoir me prononcer. Il fait partie des compositeurs français que je n'ai pas encore pris le temps d'approfondir. Ceci-dit, c'est aussi vrai pour Martinu que je ne connais qu'au travers de ses six symphonies. Je n'ai pas encore réécouté ses cinquième et sixième, mais pour l'instant ma préférée est la troisième. Verdict demain!

Après avoir écouté la cinquième et sixième, voici mon petit classement préférentiel:
La troisième qui reste ma préférée, suivie par la cinquième qui m'a beaucoup plu aussi. Après, la sélection est plus difficile. Je pense préférer la quatrième à la sixième et ensuite la une et en dernier la N°2 qui est celle qui m'a le moins marqué.
