Jaromír Weinberger est un compositeur tchèque et américain né à Prague le 8 janvier 1896 et mort à Petersburg en Floride le 8 août 1967.
Weinberger est né à Prague, d'une famille d'origine juive. Il a entendu les chants populaires tchèques du temps passé à la ferme de ses grand-parents dans sa jeunesse. Il a commencé à jouer le piano à l'âge de 5 ans, et commença à composer à 10 ans. Il a commencé des études musicales avec Jaroslav Krička. A 14 ans, il étudie au Conservatoire de Prague la composition avec Vítězslav Novák et Karel Hoffmeister. Plus tard, à Leipzig, il a étudié avec Max Reger et assimilé sa difficile technique de contrepoint. Entre 1922 et 1926 il était professeur de composition au conservatoire d'Ithaca (actuellement école de musique de Université d'Ithaca), New York.
En 1939, après des voyages étendus au Les Etats-Unis, Bratislava, et Vienne, il s'est sauvé son pays d'origine pour échapper aux nazis et devient enseignant à New York et dans l' Ohio. Il a écrit un certain nombre de travaux sur la commission des orchestres américains. Il est devenu un citoyen américain en 1948.
Pendant les années 50, Weinberger s'est déplacé à Petersburg en Floride. Plus tard, il s'est développé un cancer du cerveau. Ceci ayant pour conséquence de négliger la musique et donc de ne plus avoir de rentrées d'argent, il prend un surdosage mortel de drogue en août 1967. Son épouse, Hansi Lemberger Weinberger (également connu sous le nom de Jane), décède le 31 juillet 1968.
Oeuvres principales
Weinberger composé plus de 100 opus, y compris des opéras, operettas, oeuvres chorales et orchestrales. Cependant, la seule oeuvre encore connue est l'opéra Schwanda le joueur de cornemuse (Dudák de Švanda), un succès mondial après sa première en 1927. L'opéra est encore exécuté de temps en temps, et Polka et fugue en est souvent entendu dans une version de concert.

Cependant, la seule oeuvre encore connue est l'opéra Schwanda le joueur de cornemuse (Dudák de Švanda), un succès mondial après sa première en 1927. L'opéra est encore exécuté de temps en temps, et Polka et fugue en est souvent entendu dans une version de concert.
Voici donc cette seule oeuvre connue de Weinberger (on ne trouve d'ailleurs rien d'autre !).
