Anthony Gilbert (1934-2023)

Anthony Gilbert (né le 26 juillet 1934 à Londres - mort le 5 juillet 2023) était un compositeur et universitaire britannique, longtemps associé au Royal Northern College of Music.

Gilbert, né à Londres le 26 juillet 1934, a d'abord suivi une formation de traducteur, puis a étudié la composition en privé avec Mátyás Seiber, le piano avec Denis Holloway au Trinity College et la composition avec Alexander Goehr et Anthony Milner au Morley College. Il a également étudié avec Gunther Schuller à Tanglewood.

Il a travaillé pour la succursale londonienne de Schott, commençant comme magasinier puis rédacteur en chef de la musique contemporaine et chef de la production. En 1970, il s'est déplacé vers le nord, d'abord en tant que Granada Arts Fellow à l'Université de Lancaster, puis au Royal Northern College of Music, en tant que premier tuteur puis directeur de l'école de composition et de musique contemporaine, où il est resté jusqu'à sa retraite en 1999. Il a travaillé pendant de longues périodes en tant que chef du département de composition du New South Wales State Conservatorium dans les années 1980. Ses éditeurs étaient Schott Music (œuvres antérieures à 1994) et University of York Music Press (à partir de 1994).

Gilbert est décédé le 5 juillet 2023, à 88 ans.


Œuvres

Gilbert était un compositeur prolifique du début des années 1960, écrivant la majorité de ses œuvres pour ensemble instrumental ou de chambre. Les premières pièces d'ensemble incluent Brighton Piece et Nine or Ten Osannas (tous deux en 1967), et des œuvres spécialement écrites pour The Fires of London, telles que The Incredible Flute Music (1970) et Spell Respell pour clarinette de basset et piano (1973). À partir des années 1970, il produit une série de compositions orchestrales plus importantes telles que la Symphonie (1973) et Ghost and Dream Dancing (1974), qu'il appelle « en effet, une seconde symphonie », ainsi que deux opéras : The Scene -Machine (1970, pour le Staatstheater Kassel) et The Chakravaka-Bird (1977, pour BBC Radio). D'autres œuvres de cette époque incluent Dream Carousels pour ensemble à vent (l'œuvre la plus jouée de Gilbert, écrite pour le chef d'orchestre du RNCM Timothy Reynish) et le cycle de mélodies orchestrales Certain Lights Reflecting. Les deux ont été inspirés par les écrits de la poétesse tasmanienne Sarah Day. Igórochki, un concerto pour flûte à bec écrit pour John Turner, a été achevé en 1992 et il y avait un concerto lyrique pour violon, On Beholding a Rainbow (1997), enregistré en 2005 avec le soliste Anthony Marwood.

Bien qu'il ne soit pas connu pour son intérêt pour les formes traditionnelles, Gilbert a composé quatre sonates pour piano (la plus récente en 2022) et un cycle de cinq quatuors à cordes couvrant les années 1972 à 2009. Le troisième quatuor a été enregistré par le Nossek String Quartet (1999), le Madawaska Quartet (2009) et le Bingham Quartet (2014), et le quatrième par le Tavec Quartet (2009). Il a écrit un long essai sur le British String Quartet depuis 1935. Il y a aussi un trio à cordes, Humdance (2007) et un quintette à cordes, Haven of Mysteries, créé par le Carducci String Quartet avec le violoncelliste Guy Johnston au Wigmore Hall le 14 juin 2015.

Commentaire

Le titre apparemment désinvolte de cette composition pour cinq instruments de 1967 - clarinette et cor, violon et violoncelle et piano - est rigoureusement exact : les musiciens doivent jouer une sélection de neuf ou dix pièces parmi les quatorze fournies par la partition. Environ un tiers de l'œuvre restera donc inédite lors d'une représentation ; un peu comme le côté obscur de la lune, cette musique est connue pour être là (du moins par les personnes qui lisent la note de programme), cachée et hors de portée. Il y a toujours plus que ce que nous pouvons expérimenter.

Même ainsi, il y a beaucoup de choses que nous pouvons. Bien que Gilbert appelle ses pièces par le cri de louange biblique, elles sont très variées dans l'instrumentation et le ton, avec des éjaculations fortes équilibrées par des fragments atmosphériques ou mystérieux, et des éclats lumineux entrecoupés de mouvements plus développés. Chacune porte un titre, parfois poétique : « Osanna contre l'homme des glaces » (l'un des morceaux les plus longs, se terminant par les instruments s'achevant sur des notes répétées), « Osanna pour les couleurs de certaines personnes » (une courte séquence d'accords crescendo-decrescendo ), 'Pour mes trois étoiles' (contrastes soudains, pas de piano), 'Pour un printemps sans fantômes' (violon et piano ensemble dans des accords assourdissants).

Bien sûr, il est possible qu'aucun de ces quatre ne soit inclus. Seuls doivent être joués trois que le compositeur désigne juste d'une initiale et demande à être placés en premier (« Osanna pour M. », un solo de clarinette avec violoncelle intermittent), centralement (« Osanna pour C. », un peu litanie de duos, un trio et des sections inflexibles en tutti) et enfin ('Osanna pour S.', un autre mouvement long et changeant, commencé par les deux cordes). Sera également susceptible d'être présent le très bref et bruyant - un véritable osanna - « Pour les divers matins d'été du 28 juin », qui peut apparaître plusieurs fois, comme un refrain.
