Jef Maes (1905-1996)

Joseph "Jef" Maes (né le 5 avril 1905 à Anvers - mort le 30 juin 1996 à Anvers) était un compositeur et altiste belge.

Encouragé par son ami André Cluytens, il complète ses études au conservatoire flamand d' Anvers. Il a étudié l'alto avec Napoléon Distelmans; la musique de chambre avec Albert van de Vijver ; et le contrepoint et fugue avec Karel Candael.

A 23 ans, il compose sa première œuvre, une Méditation romantique pour violon et piano.

Après ses études, il est employé pendant deux ans comme altiste dans l'orchestre de l'opéra d'Anvers ; en 1926, il participe à un orchestre sous la direction de Lodewijk de Vocht, Nieuwe Concerten. En 1930, il est soliste des célèbres concerts Dierentuin à Anvers, dirigés par Flor Alpaerts. Ensuite, il a été altiste pendant environ 10 ans avec l'Orchestre du Casino au Casino de Knokke. En 1933, il enseigne à l'académie de musique de Boom, Anvers ; dix ans plus tard, il est nommé directeur de l'académie. De 1942 à 1955, il donne des cours d'harmonie au Conservatoire Royal Flämi d'Anvers. Il a également enseigné la musique de chambre de 1955 à 1970.

Avec Gaston Ariën, JA Zwijsen et Steven Candael, Maes a fondé l'Antwerpse Philharmonie (Orchestre Philharmonique d'Anvers) en 1955, leur premier concert donné le 10 décembre 1956. L'orchestre est maintenant connu sous le nom de Royal Flemish Philharmonic ou DeFilharmonie, et est officiellement appelé Orchestre symphonique d'Anvers.

À partir de 1961, il dirige le Camp musical international annuel, organisé par "jeunesse et musique" en Belgique pendant les vacances d'été. Il a également été mentor musical à Turnhout.
