Cecil Frederick Coles (7 octobre 1888 - 26 avril 1918) était un compositeur écossais qui a été tué en service actif pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
Coles est né à Kirkcudbright, le fils d'un paysagiste et archéologue, et fait ses études en 1899 à la George Watson's College, Edimbourg, puis en 1905 à l'Université d'Edimbourg. En 1906, il a remporté une bourse d'études pour le London College of Music. À Londres, Coles est devenu membre du Morley College Orchestra et a fait la connaissance de Gustav Holst, qui y a travaillé comme directeur musical et a été promu en 1907. En 1908, Coles a reçu une bourse pour une étude de composition à la Musikhochschule Stuttgart.
À la fin de ses études, il devient chef adjoint Königlichen Oper Stuttgart, et organiste de St. Katherine's, une église anglaise de la ville. Certaines de ses compositions ont été jouées à la Liederhalle de Stuttgart. À Stuttgart, il a également rencontré sa future épouse, Phoebe Relston.
Il est retourné au Royaume-Uni en 1913. Lorsque la guerre a éclaté, il a rejoint le Queen Victoria's Rifles et est devenu leur chef de musique. En 1914, son monologue dramatique pour voix et orchestre, Fra Giacomo, est présenté en première au Queen's Hall. Pendant son service actif, il a envoyé des manuscrits à son ami Gustav Holst mais certains se sont perdus.
Il a été tué par des tirs de snipers allemands sur le front occidental, tout en aidant à récupérer des blessés. Il a été enterré au Croury British Cemetery à Croury-Sur-Somme.
Parmi ses œuvres conservées se trouvent des pièces pour piano, des mélodies et des pièces orchestrales, dont l'ouverture The Comedy of Errors (1913 première à Cologne), la Suite From the Scottish Highland et la suite Behind the Lines (Derrière les lignes) pour orchestre de chambre, et dont deux des quatre mouvements sont perdus.
Le travail de Coles a été "redécouvert" dans un enregistrement de 2001. Grâce à la persévérance et à la recherche desa fille Penny Catherine Coles, ses manuscrits, certains encoreincrustés d'éclats d'obus, ont été minutieusement reconstitués.
Sa musique a été utilisée comme musique de titre d'ouverture et de fermeture pour une série documentaire intitulée La Première Guerre mondiale. Le morceau de musique était Cortège, arrangé par Orlando Gough. Cortège est l'un des deux mouvements survivants d'une suite composée par Coles appelée Behind the Lines. Cortege apparaît également sur Artists Rifles, un CD de livre audio publié en 2004 comportant la poésie de guerre lue par Siegfried Sassoon, Edmund Blunden, Robert Graves, David Jones, Edgell Rickword et Lawrence Binyon, ainsi que de la musique d'Edward Elgar, de George Butterworth, de Ralph Vaughan Williams, de Maurice Ravel, de Gustav Holst, d'Ivor Gurney, d'Ernest Moeran et d'Arthur Bliss.
