Mark-Anthony Turnage est un compositeur anglais, né le 10 juin 1960 à Corringham (Essex).
Mark-Anthony Turnage fait ses études au Royal College of Music avec Oliver Knussen et John Lambert, et découvre le jazz (Miles Davis en particulier). Il obtient en 1981, pour sa pièce pour orchestre Night Dances, le Prix Guiness. Deux années plus tard, l’obtention du Prix Mendelssohn lui permet de travailler avec Gunther Schuller à Tanglewood. Hans Werner Henze l’encourage à écrire un opéra pour la Biennale de Munich : Greek (1988), basé sur l'adaptation de Œdipe-Roi par Steven Berkoff. Dans la plupart des oeuvres qui suivirent, Three Screaming Popes, Kai, Momentum and Drowned Out, composées alors qu’il était compositeur en résidence au City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra de 1989 à 1993, ainsi que le cycle de Chansons écrit en 1989, Some Days, Mark Anthony Turnage s’exprime plus librement. Le procédé d'assimilation a atteint son apotheose dans le concerto de saxophone Your Rockaby (1993), et trois années plus tard dans Blood on the Floor. Dans la deuxième moitié des années 1990, Turnage composa encore essentiellement de la musique de scène. Son deuxième opéra, The Silver Tassie (1997-1999), basé sur la pièce de Sean O'Casey, a été créé à l’English National Opera en 2000. Il a obtenu de nombreuses commandes qui lui ont permis d'écrire Silent Cities (1998), créé par l’Orchestre philharmonique de Tokyo, et About Time (1999), oeuvre composée pour instruments modernes et historiques. L’an 2000, marque le début d’une collaboration entre Mark-Anthony Turnage et le BBC Symphony Orchestra, dont il fut le premier associé. Cette coopération débuta brillamment avec Another Set To, écrit pour le tromboniste Christian Lindberg. Actuellement, il écrit de la musique instrumentale. Il a notamment composé A Quick Blast, créé par le BBCSO en 2001 au Festival de Cheltenham, ainsi que Bass Inventions, œuvre dont la première interprétation fut exécutée par Dave Holland en mai 2001 à Amsterdam. Dark Crossing fut créée en 2001 par Olivier Knussen et le London Sinfonietta Orchestra, avec lequel Turnage collabore depuis plusieurs années déjà. Son concerto pour trombone, Yet another Set To (2004) est dédié à Christian Lindberg. En 2006, Turnage a été nommé co-compositeur en résidence de l' Orchestre symphonique de Chicago , poste qu'il a occupé à côté du compositeur argentin Osvaldo Golijov.
