Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Ralph Vaughan Williams est un compositeur britannique né le 12 octobre 1872 à Down Ampney (Gloucester) et mort le 26 août 1958.

Petit-neveu de Charles Darwin et fils d'un pasteur, il étudie le violon puis la composition au Royal College of Music à Londres. Il y rencontre notamment Gustav Holst qui devient son ami. Il poursuit ses études au Trinity College à Cambridge. Il réside ensuite à Londres et fait de nombreux voyages dans son pays où il recueille un certain nombre de chants populaires. Il se marie en 1897. Cette même année, il visite l'Allemagne où il suit l'enseignement de Max Bruch. Il rencontre en France Maurice Ravel. Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, il sert en tant qu'ambulancier, ce qui le marque profondément. Il est probable que les bruits d'artillerie contribuèrent à sa surdité tardive. Il devient professeur de composition au Royal College of Music de 1919 à 1938. Il conserve également une activité de direction d'orchestre et il dirige à de nombreuses reprises les Passions de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Il meurt en 1958, universellement reconnu. Ses funérailles ont lieu à l'abbaye de Westminster où ses cendres reposent près de celles d'Henry Purcell.

ce sont ceux que je connais bien.

Il faut dire aussi que sa meilleure symphonie, la 9eme, a été composée à l'âge de 85 ans.
Et que c'est peut-être le seul grand compositeur britannique du 20eme siècle qui n'ait pas été ennobli .....

J'aime beaucoup ce compositeur trop méconnu.

Comme tout le monde ne joue pas du tuba, j'ai voulu donner un lien pour permettre à ce qui ne le connaissent pas d'avoir une idée de ce qu'est ce concerto.
Sur YouTube, ce que l'on trouve est absolument HORRIBLE éventuellement pour rigoler, mais j'ai trouvé cela plutôt triste.(cela ne marche pas à tous les coups, Jean-merci pour ta contribution)

Il y a une autre oeuvre de VW également très facile, c'est sa troisième symphonie "pastorale". Il faut la replacer dans son contexte : c'est une réaction contre les horreurs de la guerre. Je l'apprécie d'autant plus.

Très beau, mais je ne comprends pas pourquoi le 'rondo' serait 'à la tedesca'.
Ca ne sonne pas vraiment 'allemand'.

Enfin !....imaginez. C'est ce que faisais Vaughan-Williams lorsqu'il composait ce concerto, puisque, comme Beethoven, il était devenu sourd à la fin de sa vie.

Il est un fait que les concertos pour tuba sont rares dans le répertoire musical. Et d'autant plus que celui ci est pour tuba basse.

Le deuxième mouvement a été transcrit par le compositeur pour violoncelle et cordes sous le titre de "romance".

Parmi ses symphonies, celle que je préfère est la 7ème, Antarctica, qui décrit de façon réaliste (avec machine à vent) les paysages et la faune du continent antarctique. C'était à l'orogine une musique de film retraçant l'épopée de Scott.

La 3ème, à mon avis, n'a de pastoral que le nom.

J'aime beaucoup aussi son Lark ascending (l'envol de l'alouette), une merveilleuse romance pour violon et orchestre.

C'est très néo-romantique, je dirais Elgar ou Nielsen par exemple... Mais il y a parfois des passages plus modernes dans la "Symphonie N°7" par exemple.

Je viens de réécouter sa musique pour le film de Michaël Balcon, Scott of the Antarctic (1947), conçue sous la forme d'une suite de 18 extraits pour une durée totale de 41 minutes environ. La petite histoire raconte que "Ralph Vaughan Williams se lança dans une lecture assidue de tous les livres qu'il put se procurer sur l'histoire de l'expédition désastreuse de 1911/1912 et fut alors de plus en plus alarmé par la découverte de l'inefficacité de son organisation et par le fait tragique que des vies humaines furent mises en danger et perdues inutilement à cause de décisions irresponsables comme celle de laisser partir cinq personnes avec seulement des rations pour quatre. Au fur et à mesure de ses lectures, la musique commença à envahir son esprit: musique pour la glace, la neige, le blizzard, et pour les hommes, les femmes, les pingouins et les poneys. Bien avant d'avoir pris connaissance du script, Ralph Vaughan Williams avait composé une grande partie de la partition. Dans un essai rédigé en 1945 et intitulé <Composing for the Films - Composer pour le Film>, il avait déclaré: <<Un grand film sera peut-être un jour construit sur la base d'une musique. J'aime beaucoup le thème principal surtout lors de sa réexposition sous le titre "Scott on the Glacier", très expressif dans cette version. Plus globalement, l'oeuvre n'appuie pas trop l'aspect tragique de cette expédition maudite. Elle souligne par moments, notamment lorsqu'elle emploie la voix de soprano de Merry Gamba et les choeurs, les grands espaces nus et la solitude de l'équipée. Une machine à vent est utilisée dans l'extrait "Blizzard". Il y a des passages assez doux et mystérieux. En fin de compte, la musique installe le drame avec beaucoup de retenue et de délicatesse, même l'orgue de Jonathan Scott semble avancer sur la pointe de ses notes, sous l'apparence de lumières gelées.

Il me semblait avoir parlé de la musique du film Scott lorsque je l'ai écoutée il y a bien 2 ans... mais j'ai dû oublier.

En tout cas elle m'avait bien plu, peut-être un peu moins quand même que la Sinfonia Antarctica qui en est tirée. Cette symphonie est celle que je préfère parmi les 9 de Vaughan Williams. Je les ai toutes en CD et à part la 1ère, Sea-Symphony, je les aime bien toutes.

Il va bien sûr falloir que je me penche plus sérieusement sur son oeuvre de concert et plus prioritairement sur ses symphonies. Pour l'instant, une oeuvre de concert de lui que je connais très bien est son Concerto pour tuba.
