Rudolph von Grofé, dit Ferde Grofé, est un compositeur, pianiste et arrangeur américain né le 27 mars 1892 à New York et mort le 3 avril 1972 à Santa Monica.
Fils de Emil von Grofé, un baryton et de sa femme Elsa Johanna Bierlich, une violoncelliste professionnelle, avec qui Ferde reçoit des notions de piano et de violon. Son père décède en 1899, et plus tard sa mère envoie Ferde à Leipzig étudier le piano, l'alto et la composition. Il écrit sa première composition (Four Rags for piano) en 1906, il a 14 ans.
Il commence sa carrière comme altiste à l’Orchestre Symphonique de San Francisco (1909-1919).
A partir de 1917, il écrit de nombreux arrangements pour l’orchestre de "jazz symphonique" de Paul Whiteman. Outre des arrangement de thèmes de Broadway et de morceaux de jazz, Grofé écrit quelques partitions "symphoniques" pour cet orchestre ("Metropolis",…). C’est pour Whiteman qu’il écrit l’arrangement pour orchestre de jazz de la "Rhapsody in blues" de George Gershwin, joué en 1924 par l’orchestre avec Gerswhin au piano (il en effectuera l'orchestration pour orchestre symphonique en 1942). Il écrit aussi l’arrangement du "Concerto en fa" du même Gershwin, pour le premier enregistrement de cette pièce (par Whiteman en présence du compositeur). Il écrit des musiques de film à partir de 1930 (King of Jazz, Redemption, Minstrel Man, 1942, etc)
Ces travaux lui confèrent une "légitimité" et Grofé écrit alors des pièces plus ambitieuses, très ancrées — à l’instar de certaines œuvres d’Aaron Copland — dans la "tradition américaine".
Ses compositions les plus connues sont la "Mississippi suite" (1926), la "Grand Canyon suite" (1931), la Death Valley Suite (1949), la "Niagara falls suite" (1961).

Ses grandes Suites symphoniques sont très descriptives :il faut écouter en priorité The Grand Canyon, mais également Mississipi et Death Valley (la Vallée de la Mort), où l'on retrouve quelques thèmes populaires comme le fameux "O Suzanna".
