Gustav Strube (1867-1953)

Gustav Strube (né le 3 mars 1867 à Ballenstedt - mort le 2 février 1953 à Baltimore, Maryland) était un chef d'orchestre et compositeur américain d'origine allemande. Il a été le chef d'orchestre fondateur de l' Orchestre symphonique de Baltimore en 1916 et a enseigné au Peabody Conservatory. Il a écrit deux opéras, Ramona , qui a été créé en 1916, et The Captive, qui a été créé au Lyric Theatre de Baltimore en février 1938. Il était également membre du célèbre Saturday Night Club de Baltimore avec HL Mencken.

Strube est né à Ballenstadt, dans le Harz, en 1867 et est issu d'une famille douée pour la musique. À l'âge de 10 ans, Strube étudie le violon avec son père, et à l'âge de 16 ans, il entra au Conservatoire de Leipzig. Strube gagnait de l'argent de poche en faisant de la musique de danse pour les soirées dansantes du samedi soir. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il entre à l' Orchestre du Gewandhaus da Leipzig et joue avec Johann Strauss junior, tout en enseignant au Conservatoire de Mannheim. En 1889, Strube et le chef d'orchestre Artur Nikisch ont immigré aux États-Unis pour jouer comme violoniste dans l' Orchestre symphonique de Boston.

Strube a joué dans le Boston Symphony Orchestra pendant 23 ans (1891-1913) et est finalement devenu maître de concert. Strube a été l'un des premiers chefs d'orchestre du Boston Pops, formé en raison du succès du "march master" John Philip Sousa, selon le Boston Pops Homepage.

Il était mécène national de Delta Omicro, une fraternité musicale professionnelle internationale.


Œuvres : Il a composé deux opéras, deux symphonies, deux poèmes symphoniques (Sehnsucht et Harzgebirge), trois ouvertures, une rhapsodie orchestrale, deux concertos pour violon, deux quatuors à cordes, un quintette à vent et un trio avec piano. Il a écrit aussi The Theory and Use of Chords: A Text-Book of Harmony (Boston, 1928).
