Basil Harwood (11 avril 1859 - 3 avril 1949) était un organiste et compositeur dans la tradition de la musique d'église anglaise, surtout connu aujourd'hui pour ses œuvres liturgiques, en particulier son hymne O How Glorious is the Kingdom (1898) et son Service in A flat (1892), qui restent toujours populaires dans les églises anglaises. Il a écrit de nombreux airs d'hymne, dont plusieurs sont devenus bien connus, notamment Luckington ("Let All the World in Every Corner Sing") et Thornbury ("O Jesus I Have Promised" et "Thy hand, O God, has Guided").
Basil Harwood est né le 11 avril 1859 à Woodhouse, Olveston, Gloucestershire, le plus jeune enfant d'Edward Harwood (1818-1907), un banquier. Sa mère Mary, née Sturge (1840–1867), était d' origine Quaker, et Harwood a été élevé dans cette foi jusqu'à ce qu'il passe à l'anglicanisme en 1869 après le deuxième mariage de son père.
En tant que garçon, Harwood a fréquenté l'école préparatoire Walton Lodge à Clevedon, suivie en 1864 par Charterhouse. En 1876, il remporte une bourse au Trinity College d'Oxford, où il est placé en deuxième classe de modérations classiques (1879) et en troisième d'histoire moderne (1881). Il a obtenu son diplôme de musique (BMus) en 1880, étudiant avec CW Corfe, puis le Choragus de l'université.
Après Oxford, Harwood passe un an à Leipzig pour étudier la composition avec Jadassohn et l'orgue avec Papperitz.
Il devient docteur en musique (DMus) en 1896, soumettant comme travail de doctorat une mise en musique du Psaume 86, Inclina domin.
Le premier poste professionnel de Harwood fut organiste de St Barnabas, Pimlico en 1883, poste qu'il occupa jusqu'en 1887. Il servit ensuite comme organiste à la cathédrale d'Ely pendant cinq ans, suivi d'un dernier déménagement à Oxford en 1892 où il resta organiste de la cathédrale Christ Church jusqu'à sa retraite en 1909.
Le 27 décembre 1899, il épousa une de ses anciennes élèves, Mabel Ada Jennings (1871–1974). Le couple a eu deux fils, John Edward Godfrey (né en 1900) et Basil Anthony (né en 1903). En 1909, Harwood prit une retraite anticipée et retourna dans le Gloucestershire pour y gérer son domaine familial.
En 1936, Harwood et sa femme ont déménagé à Londres, où ils sont restés à l'exception de quelques absences temporaires à Bournemouth puis à Shiplake pendant la guerre. Harwood est décédé le 3 avril 1949 à son domicile, 50 Courtfield Gardens, Kensington, âgé de 89 ans. Il fut enterré dans l'église St Barnabas, Pimlico.
A noter que pendant son séjour à Oxford, Harwood était aussi chef d'orchestre de l'Oxford Orchestral Association (1892–8) et est devenu le premier chef d'orchestre de l' Oxford Bach Choir en 1896. Il a occupé le poste de prédicateur du Keble College entre 1892 et 1903, et était Choragus à l'Université de 1900 jusqu'à sa retraite. Il a édité The Oxford Hymn Book (1908) et a agi comme examinateur d'Oxford pendant plusieurs années universitaires entre 1900 et 1915.
