Le professeur émérite Barry Ernest Conyngham, (né le 27 août 1944 à Sydney) est un compositeur et universitaire australien. Il a publié plus de soixante-dix œuvres et plus de trente enregistrements de ses compositions, et ses œuvres ont été créées ou jouées en Australie, au Japon, en Amérique du Nord et du Sud, au Royaume-Uni et en Europe.
Conyngham est né à Sydney. Il a d' abord intéressé au jazz, et a étudié avec Raymond Hanson et Richard Meale, mais a tourné son attention à l' écriture orchestrale au milieu des années 1960 avec les encouragements de Peter Sculthorpe. Il a complété un baccalauréat ès arts à l' Université de Sydney en 1967 et une maîtrise ès arts (avec distinction.) à la même université en 1971. En 1970, il a visité le Japon avec une bourse de Churchill, où il a étudié avec Toru Takemitsu. C'était inhabituel, car les compositeurs australiens choisissaient généralement l'Europe et la Grande-Bretagne comme lieu d'étude.
En 1972, il est allé aux États-Unis avec une bourse Harkness et a obtenu un certificat d'études post-doctorales de l' Université de Californie, San Diego en 1973. Il a été membre de l'Université de Princeton 1973-1974, et compositeur en -Résidence à l' Université d'Aix-Marseille en 1974-1975. Il a été maître de conférences à l'Université de Melbourne de 1975 à 1979, puis maître de conférences de 1975 à 1979. Il a été chercheur invité à l' Université du Minnesota, a été Senior Fulbright Fellow en 1982 et a obtenu cette année-là un doctorat en musique de l'Université de Melbourne. Il devient professeur et directeur de l'École des arts créatifs de laUniversité de Wollongong 1989-94. Il a été vice-chancelier de la Fondation Southern Cross University 1994-2000, basée à Lismore , Nouvelle-Galles du Sud.
Il a été le premier musicien à occuper la chaire d'études australiennes à l'Université Harvard (2000-2001).
En 1978, il remporte le Albert H. Maggs Composition Award (il le remporte à nouveau en 2008). En 1997, il a été nommé membre de l' Ordre d'Australie (AM), "pour service rendu à la musique en tant que compositeur et à l'enseignement et à l'administration de la musique".
En 2000, Barry Conyngham a été invité à prononcer le 2e discours annuel de Peggy Glanville-Hicks pour le Sydney Spring Festival.
En 2003, il a reçu une commande de la Ian Potter Music Commission Fellowship.
Conyngham a été impliqué dans un certain nombre d'organisations artistiques, notamment le World Music Council , Opera Australia, l' Australian Music Center et la Swiss Global Artistic Foundation. Il a été aussi le président du Conseil de Musique du Conseil Australien.
Après s'être retiré de la vie universitaire pour se concentrer sur la composition et la performance musicale, le 22 décembre 2010, il a été nommé doyen de la faculté du VCA et de la musique à l'université de Melbourne.
