Jack Body (1944-2015)

John Stanley Body ONZM (né le 7 octobre 1944 à Te Aroha - mort le 10 mai 2015 à Wellington) était un compositeur, ethnomusicologue, photographe, enseignant et producteur artistique néo-zélandais.

Jack Body est né le 7 octobre 1944 à Te Aroha, une ville du district agricole de Waikato sur l'île du Nord. Les deux parents venaient de familles agricoles; son père, Stan, était un entrepreneur en terrassement. Voyant ses sœurs aînées suivre des cours de piano, Body a convaincu ses parents de le laisser emboîter le pas et a commencé des cours de piano avec William Cranna, diplômé de la Royal Scottish Academy of Music et employé du conseil d'administration local. Les premiers efforts de composition de Body dans son enfance consistaient à recomposer ses exercices prescrits dans les écoles royales et à les exécuter lors de récitals de piano de fin d'année dans la salle paroissiale locale.

Body a fréquenté l'école secondaire en tant que pensionnaire au King's College d'Auckland. Là, son intérêt pour la musique et la peinture s'est enflammé dans la vie musicale dynamique de l'école sous la direction du professeur de musique L.C.M. Saunders, avec qui Body a pris des cours de piano et d'orgue. À la fin de ses études secondaires, il a postulé à l' Elam School of Fine Arts, mais a plutôt choisi d'étudier la musique à l'Université d'Auckland, commençant un baccalauréat en musique en 1963. À cette époque, la composition n'était pas proposée comme programme d'études au niveau du premier cycle ; néanmoins, Body composa de façon prolifique pendant ses années de premier cycle. Pendant ses études à l'Université d'Auckland, Body a également suivi des cours d'orgue avec Peter Godfrey et a chanté dans la chorale de la cathédrale anglicane St. Mary de Parnell. En 1965, il fut nommé organiste et chef de chœur de l'église anglicane St. Aidan de Remuera.

Après avoir obtenu son BMus avec mention très bien, Body a commencé sa maîtrise en musique en 1966, étudiant la composition avec Ron Tremain dans sa première année et Robin Maconie dans sa deuxième. Il a terminé son MMus, avec un diplôme d'enseignement supplémentaire, en 1967. En tant qu'étudiant de troisième cycle, Body a commencé à rassembler des artistes et des musiciens pour des événements et des projets. Une foule considérable d'artistes avant-gardistes d'Auckland gravitait autour de son appartement Birdwood Crescent à Parnell. En 1967, alors qu'il était président de la section néo-zélandaise de l'ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music), Body organisa un festival appelé Aucklanders and the Arts dans le bâtiment de l'Union des étudiants de l'Université d'Auckland.

Une bourse du Conseil des arts en 1969 a permis à Body de se rendre à Cologne pour étudier au Ferienkurse für Neue Musik de Mauricio Kagel. Avec une prolongation de la bourse du Conseil des arts, Body a pu étudier à l'Institut de sonologie d'Utrecht, aux Pays-Bas, de 1969 à 1970. De retour chez lui en 1970 via des voyages à travers la Grèce, le nord de l'Inde et Djakarta a suscité la fascination de Body pour le non-Traditions musicales occidentales (non-Western musical traditions).

À son retour en Nouvelle-Zélande, Body a pris un poste d'enseignant au Tawa College de Wellington, mais a démissionné après un an pour se concentrer sur des projets de composition en freelance. Body s'est rendu à Bali et à Java pendant quatre mois en 1974, après quoi l'Akademi Musik Indonesia de Yogyakarta (maintenant à l'Institut indonésien des arts), l'a invité à revenir en 1976 en tant que conférencier invité. Le voyage de retour de Body à Yogyakarta a été soutenu par le ministère néo-zélandais des Affaires étrangères. Bien que Body enseignait la pratique de la musique occidentale à l'Akademi, son expérience de vie à Yogyakarta lui a permis d'en apprendre davantage sur la musique traditionnelle de la région, ainsi que de faire de nombreux enregistrements sur le terrain de la musique locale et des sons environnementaux.

Après un an à Yogyakarta, Body a rencontré le linguiste Yono Soekarno (ou Sukarno) dans un bureau de poste indonésien et qui devait être son partenaire pendant les 40 dernières années.  Body était gay; son collègue compositeur Ross Harris a dit que Body "était un artiste gay ... c'était une position de base à partir de laquelle il a fait son travail".

À la fin de 1977, Body et Soekarno retournèrent à Wellington, où Body travailla comme compositeur indépendant tout en donnant des cours particuliers à l'Université Victoria et en animant des ateliers dans les écoles secondaires. 1980 a vu la retraite de Douglas Lilburn en tant que professeur de composition à l'Université Victoria (maintenant la New Zealand School of Music); Body a postulé et s'est vu offrir le poste. Body est resté sur la faculté de composition de l'université de Victoria jusqu'à sa retraite en 2009.

Body a vécu le reste de sa vie à Wellington, au milieu d'innombrables voyages à l'étranger. Son premier voyage en Chine a eu lieu en 1985, après quoi il a commencé à formuler des idées pour ce qui allait devenir son opéra Alley, basé sur la vie de Rewi Alley, un activiste politique néo-zélandais en Chine.

Des concerts de célébration en l'honneur du 70e anniversaire de Body ont eu lieu à la fois à l'Université d'Auckland et à l'Université Victoria de Wellington en avril 2014. Après une longue bataille contre le cancer, Body est décédé le 10 mai 2015 à Mary Potter Hospice, Wellington, le lendemain de sa méditation sur la mortalité "Cries: A Border Town" (initialement intitulé "Cries from the Border") a reçu sa première australienne au Festival international de musique de Canberra 2015. Un concert commémoratif honorant sa vie a eu lieu à St. Andrews-on-the-Terrace, Wellington, le 24 mai 2015.
