Derek BOURGEOIS (1941-2017)

Derek David Bourgeois (né à Kingston upon Thames le 16 octobre 1941 et mort le 6 septembre 2017 à Poole (Dorset)) est un compositeur britannique. Derek Bourgeois est auteur de 114 symphonies, 14 concertos, 7 œuvres pour chœur et orchestre, 2 opéras, des œuvres pour orgue, une comédie musicale et des œuvres pour la télévision. Il est le compositeur britannique le plus prolifique de son époque.



Derek Bourgeois est né à Kingston upon Thames en 1941. Après avoir passé ses études universitaires au Magdalene College, Cambridge (mention et doctorat), Bourgeois a passé deux ans au Royal College of Music, étudiant la composition avec Herbert Howells et la conduite avec Sir Adrian Boult.

De 1971 à 1984, Bourgeois a été chargé de cours en musique à l'Université de Bristol, et directeur de l'Orchestre national des jeunes de 1984 à 1993. En 1980, il a commencé à mener la bande Sun Life (maintenant la bande Stanshawe de Bristol), qui fut son introduction aux fanfares. En 1994 Bourgeois a été nommé directeur de la musique de St Paul's Girls School, Londres, un poste précédemment occupé par un certain nombre de compositeurs notables, y compris Gustav Holst et Herbert Howells.

Après avoir pris sa retraite de ce poste en 2002, il s'est installé avec sa femme Jean, violoniste, à Majorque. Après la mort de son épouse en 2006, il s'est remarié en 2008 avec Norma et a déménagé à New York, mais est retourné au Royaume-Uni en 2009. Il a également dirigé divers orchestres. Ses oeuvres symphoniques comprennent Jabbervocky-Extravaganza, pour baryton, choeur et orchestre (1963) et la fantaisie symphonique The Astronauts (1969). Pour sa Symphony of Winds, la Première Conférence Internationale pour les Conducteurs, Éditeurs et Compositeurs lui a décerné leur commission principale en 1981. [Il a également présidé la Composer's Guild of Britain et a été directeur artistique du Bristol Philharmonic Orchestra. Il a fondé le National Youth Chamber Orchestra de Grande-Bretagne en 1988. Il a également été membre du Conseil consultatif de la musique du Conseil des arts.

Bourgeois était un compositeur prolifique pour les fanfares et les orchestres à vent. Ses travaux dans cette catégorie ont inclus deux Concerti pour Brass Band, le Concerto Grosso, Blitz, Diversions, Serenade, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, et Apocalypse. En passant en revue la Sonate pour Trombone de Bourgeois, David Vinning de Trombone.org a écrit: "Bourgeois est un compositeur talentueux qui sait écrire pour le trombone et cette pièce est un nouveau travail majeur qui va sûrement devenir populaire." La première symphonie de Bourgeois, qu'il composa à l'âge de 18 ans, fut revue positivement dans The Guardian par Stanley Sadie, futur rédacteur en chef du Grove's Dictionary. En 2009, Bourgeois avait écrit 44 symphonies, bien au-delà du nombre composé par Havergal Brian, et un nombre plus important que celui produit par la plupart des compositeurs des 19e et 20e siècles. Dans une interview avec Alan Rusbridger de The Guardian, il a dit que les symphonies sont venues "dégringoler" (trumbling out). Au moment de sa mort à Poole en 2017, il y avait 114 symphonies à son nom (sur 391 n° d'opus en tout).
