Ross Harris est un compositeur néo-zélandais, né à Amberley en 1945.
Ross Harris est né à Amberley, Nouvelle-Zélande. Il a étudié à Christchurch et Wellington et enseigne à Victoria University of Wellington Music Department depuis plus de trente ans. En 1985, il a obtenu un QSM pour son opéra Waituhi (sur un livret de Witi Ihimaera) et en 1990, il a reçu la citation CANZ pour ses services à la musique en Nouvelle-Zélande.
En 2004, il a pris une retraite anticipée de l'enseignement et a commencé à travailler en tant que compositeur indépendant. Sa résidence à Auckland Philharmonia (2005-2006) a conduit à la composition de trois symphonies. En 2008 - 2009 il a été compositeur en résidence à la New Zealand School of Music de Wellington au cours de laquelle il a écrit sa Symphonie n° III, 25 Variations pour quatuor à cordes pour le New Zealand String Quartet et un cycle de chanson, The Floating Bride sur des textes de Vincent O'Sullivan. Récemment ont été créés sa Symphonie n° 4, le Concerto pour violon n° 1 (avec Anthony Marwood et l'Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle - Zélande) et son Concerto pour violoncelle (avec l'Auckland Philharmonia et Li-Wei Qin).
Il a reçu le prix contemporain SOUNZ (le prix annuel le plus prestigieux offert pour les compositeurs en Nouvelle-Zélande) à quatre reprises.
