James Nares, né à Stanwell, Middlesex, le 19 avril 1715 et mort à Londres le 10 février 1783, est un organiste, claveciniste et compositeur anglais.
Nares est né à Stanwell, bien que peu de temps après sa famille déménage à Oxfordshire. Son frère était un juge, Sir George Nares .
Il a commencé sa carrière comme organiste adjoint de John Pigott à la chapelle Saint-George dans le château de Windsor, et a ensuite été nommé organiste de la cathédrale d'York en 1735. Il s'est marié peu de temps après. Nares était un élève de Bernard Gates (Maître des choristes du roi), Johann Christoph Pepusch et William Croft. Son patron et ami était John Fountayne, le doyen de York.
Il a remplacé son tuteur, Gates, comme choriste à la Chapelle royale en 1756. A ce moment l' Université de Cambridge lui a décerné le titre de docteur en musique.
Il fut organiste assistant à la chapelle St George à Windsor, puis remplace Salisbury à York Minster comme titulaire avant de revenir à la Chapelle royale en 1756 pour devenir organiste et compositeur de George III, succédant à Maurice Greene. On pense que Nares était le premier à publier systématiquement une série de leçons de clavier pour les étudiants du piano.
Nares a démissionné de ses fonctions en Juillet 1781 en raison de problème de santé et est décédé le 10 Février 1783.
Nares est enterré dans Saint-Margaret, Westminster. Son service en fa et beaucoup de ses hymnes sont encore utilisés dans les cathédrales.
Il était le père de révérend Robert Nares (1753-1829), philologue et auteur.
Il a principalement composé surtout de la musique religieuse, mais aussi pour le chant, le clavecin et l'orgue.
