Friedrich Kuhlau (11 septembre 1786 à Uelzen près de Hanovre - 12 mars 1832 à Lyngby près de Copenhague) fut un compositeur allemand/danois.

Il est un enfant d'une famille humble, qui a déménagé à Lünebourg en 1793. Trois ans plus tard, il perd son oeil droit, quand il eut 9 ans, à cause d'un accident. Plus tard, en 1802, la famille déménage à Hambourg. Il y reçut son instruction musicale auprès de C.F.G. Schwenke, le Cantor et directeur de musique de la ville. En 1804 il a commencé à participer à plusieurs récitals en tant que pianiste, une année où il a également commencé à publier ses premiers travaux, principalement des Lieder et des pièces pour flûte et piano.En 1810, pour fuir la conscription française, il partit pour Copenhague et put y trouver une place dans une formation de musique de chambre de la Cour.
Après la représentation, très appréciée de ses premiers opéras intitulés "Die Räuberburg" (Le château des voleurs, 1814) et "Trylleharpen" (La harpe magique, 1817). Dans les années 1820, sa popularité a atteint son apogée avec "Elisa" (1820) et Lulu (1824), il fut nommé compositeur officiel de la cour royale de Danemark.
A la suite de la composition du drame "Elverhoj" en 1828, il fut distingué comme professeur. Les années suivantes ont été consacrées à voyager en Europe et en Scandinavie, retournant à Copenhague à la fin de sa vie où, fatigué, ruiné et malade, il est mort le 12 mars 1832, (en fait à Lyngby dans la banlieue).

En sus d'autres opéras, tels que "Lulu", "Die Zauberharfe" (La harpe enchantée) et "Hugo und Adelheid" il composa des œuvres vocales et instrumentales ainsi que des pièces pour le piano, dont beaucoup de sonates à destination pédagogique qui sont encore aujourd'hui très utilisées pour l'enseignement.

Le drame "Elverhoj" (en français : la colline des elfes), a été composé à l'occasion d'un mariage à la cour de Danemark en 1828. Il a été adapté en cinq mois à partir de nombreuses mélodies populaires danoises et suédoises. Le lexte a été écrit par Johann Ludvig Heiberg.

La première représentation eut lieu le 6 novembre 1828 au théâtre royal de Copenhague. Cette œuvre jouit toujours d'une grande popularité au Danemark.

Compositeur intéressant qu'on redécouvre depuis quelques années. Il existe pas mal de CD, depuis ses ouvertures d'opéras, sa musique de chambre (très importante) ou ses très nombreuses oeuvres pour piano. Il est curieux que ce pianiste (et flûtiste) n'ait composé qu'un seul concerto pour piano, son opus 7;
les deux seuls genres qu'il n'ait pas abordé sont la symphonie et la musique religieuse.

Par contre il est bien connu des pianistes débutants car de nombreuses méthodes ( slaves ) utilisent ses oeuvres pour piano comme exercices.

Je ne sais pas si à l'instar des compositeurs pianistes virtuoses, comme Czerny par exemple, il a composé des études. Par contre, dans ses opus il y a quantité de numéros consacrés à des sonatines.

J'en ai écouté une douzaine, c'est pas mal du tout, sans doute plus mélodieux que des Etudes.

Pas d'études proprement dites à ma connaissance mais de nombreuses "pièces" qui en font offices.

Oui dommage qu'il soit l'unique concerto pour piano: il est vraiment très beau!
Composé après avoir découvert le 1er cto piano de Beethoven (l'opus 15) on y sent très nettement le suivi d'un modèle ...Il aurait composé un 2eme concerto qui hélas a été perdu dans l'incendie de sa maison avec d'autres oeuvres non encore publiées.
Domage aussi que les trois enregistrements disponibles soit couplé avec des "locomotives " du genre (un avec le 1er de Beethoven, un autre avec celui de Schuman et celui-ci avec Grieg): non pas qu'il patisse de la comparaison...mais il ne manque pâs de concertos pour piano à ressusciter tout comme celui-ci! Wink

Je n'ai pas répondu aux posts précédents de Jean (pas vus ou oublis ?), pourtant je suis 100% d'accord Very Happy

J'ai réécouté de CD qui comporte toutes les ouvertures soit d'opéras soit de musiques de scène (8 en tout) et je trouve que là aussi c'est une musique splendide, avec un petit côté Beethoven-Weber qui fait son charme !
