Freda Mary Swain (née le 31 octobre 1902 à Portsmouth - morte le 29 janvier 1985 à Chinnor) était un compositrice et éducatrice britannique.
Freda Swain est née à Portsmouth, en Angleterre. Elle a étudié avec Dora Matthay et à la Royal Academy of Music avec Stanford et Arthur Alexander. Elle a remporté des prix, y compris le prix Sullivan en 1921.
En 1924, Swain commença à enseigner à la Royal Academy et, en 1936, elle fonda le British Music Movement pour aider à promouvoir les efforts de jeunes compositeurs et artistes.
Freda Swain a épousé Arthur Alexander en 1921 et, avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le couple a effectué une tournée en Afrique du Sud et en Australie, où il a donné des conférences, diffusé et présenté des récitals.
Œuvres
Swain a composé un opéra en un acte, A Second Chace, mais n'a jamais terminé un deuxième opéra, The Shadowy Waters. Elle a également composé un concerto pour piano, un concertino pour piano et cordes et autres pièces pour orchestre, mélodies et cycles de mélodiess, musique chorale et religieuse, deux quatuors à cordes, une Suite pour six trompettes et plusieurs autres pièces de chambre et instrumentales.
