Willy OSTIJN (1913-1993)

William (Willy) Ostijn (né à Kachtem le 13 juillet 1913, mort à Roulers le 30 mars 1993) est un compositeur belge néoclassique du milieu du XXe siècle.

À l’âge de seize ans, Willy Ostijn entre à l’Institut Lemmens de Malines où il étudie notamment le piano avec Marinus de Jong (de) et l’orgue avec Flor Peeters. Il obtient un diplôme pédagogique au Conservatoire royal de Gand ainsi que les premiers prix de contrepoint, de piano, de musique de chambre et de composition. Willy Ostijn devient second organiste de la Cathédrale Saint-Rombaut de Malines. À partir de 1938 et jusqu’à sa retraite, il sera également professeur d’éducation musicale à l’Athénée royal de Rœselare, une fonction qui ne l’empêchera pas, de 1939 à 1949, de donner des cours à l’Académie de musique d’Izegem.

Avant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, Ostijn a connu une certaine notoriété au sein du Trio Willy Ostijn qui interprétait des œuvres du répertoire mais également ses propres compositions. Entre 1950 et 1960 sa musique symphonique et ses pièces concertantes, toutes d’inspiration romantique, ont été jouées en Belgique par de nombreux orchestres et ont été diffusées à l’étranger. Les chefs d’orchestre Paul Doulliez, Leonce Graz, Ernest Maes, Fernand Terby et Jozef Verhelst ont été parmi les plus actifs à faire connaître son œuvre.

À partir de 1960 la désaffection du public envers la musique dite "légère" (light music) de style néoclassique a entraîné le déclin soudain de la carrière de Willy Ostijn, d’autant que la réorganisation et la réorientation de la radio publique belge en 1961 a eu pour conséquence que son œuvre n’a plus été diffusée. Ostijn s’est alors consacré principalement à la musique de chambre et à la musique chorale.

Toujours mélodique, soucieux de concision et d’élégance, Willy Ostijn, loin de rechercher l’originalité à tout prix, offre à l’auditeur l’occasion de passer un agréable moment en compagnie d’un homme de goût. Ostijn déclarait : « Je suis toujours resté fidèle à la tradition romantique qui voit la musique comme un développement spontané et logique de thèmes lyriques, au moyen d’une harmonie classique et riche, à l’orchestration infinie. » Entre 1945 et 1955 il s’est spécialisé dans les œuvres brillantes (rhapsodie, ouverture, pièce de concert, poème symphonique), souvent descriptives : "Ballet espagnol, suite", "Images de Broadway", "Suite marocaine", "Marins islandais", "Méphisto Ouverture", "Images d’Orient", "Flandria Ouverture", "London Suite", "Images de Zeebrugge", "Westland Ouverture" ou les deux "Pièce de concert pour piano et orchestre" et "Pièce de concert pour piano et cordes".

Pour l’essentiel, son œuvre symphonique est à ranger à côté de celle du Belge Arthur Meulemans, du Français Maurice Thiriet, de l’Anglais Haydn Wood et de l’Américain Ferde Grofé.
