Stephen Hartke Paul (né le 6 Juillet 1952 à Orange, New Jersey ) est un compositeur américain. Il a grandi à Manhattan, où son premier professeur de piano était Mary Miley, et il vit en Californie depuis les années 1980. Il est professeur émérite de composition à la Thornton School of Music de l' Université de Californie du Sud.
Hartke a étudié à l'Université de Yale, l' Université de Pennsylvanie et l' Université de Californie à Santa Barbara. De 1984 à 1985, il a été professeur à l' Université Fulbright de São Paulo, Brésil. Il a rejoint le corps professoral de l' École de musique de Thornton à l' Université de Californie du Sud en 1987. Il a été compositeur en résidence de l' Orchestre de chambre de Los Angeles de 1988 à 1992.
Hartke a reçu des commandes de nombreux groupes, y compris l' Orpheus Chamber Orchestra pour le nouveau projet de Brandebourg, Glimmerglass Opera (pour The Greater Good, or the Passion of Boule de Suif), le New York Philharmonic , le National Symphony Orchestra, et le Hilliard Ensemble. Il a recu le Guggenheim Fellowship en 1997, le Prix Charles Ives de l' Académie Américaine des Arts et Lettres en 2004, et le Prix Charles Ives Opéra de l'Académie américaine des Arts et Lettres en 2008. Sa composition Meanwhile - Incidental Music to Imaginary Puppet Plays a remporté le Grammy Award pour la meilleure composition classique contemporaine en 2013.
